Upgrade from Palm Tungsten T to Palm Tungsten T2 (Opinion)
UPDATED 7/29/2003 23:45 CST

In my humble opinion and if the funds are available, the new Palm Tungsten T2 (T2) is a worthwhile upgrade for current Palm Tungsten T (T1) owners. Let me plead my case, and as always, this is my own humble opinion. Feel free to agree or disagree.

Note: I just upgraded from a T1 to a T2.

SCREEN
The screen is one of the best (if not the best) I have seen on a handheld to date. When comparing the screens of the T1 and the T2 indoors, the difference is huge. The T1 pales in comparison with the new T2. As another notes, I turn it on just to admire the screen. The T2's screen is a little more difficult to view in the sunlight, but I think the difference to the T1 is marginal.

32 MB RAM
The increased amount of RAM (T1: 16 MB -> T2: 32 MB). This is a big deal, a very big deal. Yes, I know you can run applications off the external memory card, but it is so much faster to run applications straight from internal memory. When you have 32 MB of RAM, you can run everything you need and run it fast. In addition (with the US version, anyway), VersaMail and WebPro are installed in ROM. This saves a significant amount of memory. I went from 2.1 MB free on T1 with many applications installed on the external card (i.e. WordToGo, SheetToGo, SlideshowToGo, Acrobat Reader, Other Utities, etc.), to 13.6 MB free on the T2 with everything loaded in internal RAM. In addition, I have been able to install and start using AvantGo, again. Due to memory constraints on the T1, I stopped using AvantGo. Let's not forget...I always had to clear my cache out in WebPro and/or empty my mail in VersaMail due to memory constraints. I have yet to clear the cache or mail with my T2! :)

SOFTWARE
The new versions of VersaMail 2.5 and WebPro 1.1 have some value. The new version of VersaMail, 2.5, is a definite improvement over VersaMail 2.0. This upgrade alone would cost you $35, alone. There are some minor improvements in WebPro, but it is hard to put a value on their worth. It seems more stable to me when downloading PRC's off the web. In addition, the Kinoma Producer for Palm is included. While not as feature-rich as the full-blown application, it will serve the need of most users. Kinoma Producer set me back $29.00 on my T1. Of course, I can use the full version to convert movies for any Palm OS device. There is also a Photo application on the handheld and the desktop to help organize your photos. While not as feature-rich as AcidImage or SplashPhoto, it does a nice job managing photos on the T2, as well as, on the desktop.

PALM OS 5.2
Yes, I realize some folks do not think this is a big deal. For me, it is. First, it saves memory. The bug fixes for the T1 cost ~640KB of memory. Second, it includes Graffiti 2. Again, some people would argue with me here. For those folks, try this test. Run Pocket Tunes to start playing music in the background. Next, go to another application, such as WordToGo or VersaMail, and start entering information via Graffiti Anywhere, New Pen, etc. It is so slow on the T1 that I quit running Pocket Tunes in the background when replying to e-mail or entering information in other programs. With the T2, there is not a noticable slow down with using Graffiti 2, and I am able to enter data full speed.

As with anything, there are some downsides. I, personally, like the color of the T1 better, and I am not sure the battery lasts as long. I have not collected data on battery life, but I seem to be charging the T2 more often than I did the T1. At the same time, I probably have used the T2 a lot in the past five days! :)
