Dell Axim X50v Device Spotlight

Well, I have purchased and sold a Dell Axim X51v twice since I last posted on this device. I really like the X51v, and there is a lot to like about it. However, I really could not justify keeping my Palm Treo 650 and the Dell Axim X51v. Thus, I sold the first X51v that I purchased.
After a while, I really missed the multimedia capabilities of theX51v and the 640x480 screen. Thus, I decided to give the X51v another try, and I was glad to have it back. However, I just found myself using it for video and audio playback, so I thought it might be a good opportunity to try the new iPod with Video.
While the screen on the new iPod is much smaller than the Dell Axim X51v, I have found that the integration with iTunes and the 60GB storage capacity much outweighs the screen size. I use the iPod for audio and video playback as well as a portable hard drive for all my files. My iPod has made it much easier to manage my data, photos, music, and movies. With 60GB, I can carry everything with me without trying to manage pieces and parts of what I would like to have with me.
While maybe not for everyone, the Palm Treo 650 along with my new 60GB iPod has made life much more manageable than ever. |

I was able to sell my Dell Axim X50v, and there is a Dell Axim X51v on its way to me. It should be here tomorrow, and I am looking forward to running it through the paces. The hardest part is waiting for the device to charge.
I still plan on using my Palm Treo 650 as my primary device, but you never know.

It looks as though Dell has released the Axim X51v, the update to the Axim X50v. Personally, I like all the improvements that have been made.
From the reviews, it appears that the built-in storage on the X51v is much faster. Plus, the built-in storage size is 256 MB (X51v) instead of 128 MB (X50v). I like the idea of not having to have software installed on removable media, but I am still not convinced it will be fast enough when compared to using a SD card. With the X50v, I run all the software from my SD card because the built-in storage is so slow. Hopefully, this is addressed appropriately.

Well, I have not had a lot to comment on lately. I have been pretty busy writing about my experience with my new Palm Treo 650 and a borrowed Palm LifeDrive. However, it appears another ROM update has been released for the X50 and X50v, and it includes some major enhancements. As with all updates, I am really debating whether or not to reinstall all the applications after I load the new ROM or just restore from a backup.
Either way, here is the list of updates:- Enhance LEAP-WAP wireless encryption.
- Increase the data transfer rate of SDIO to 19.5MHz on PXA27X C5.
- Add a new network certification -- GoDaddy SSL certificate root into the ROM image.
- Phase in new updated Bluetooth stack BTW-CE 1.5.0.2601.
- Added wireless compatibility for Cisco Wireless Multimedia (WMM)
- Bug fix for Home applet screen on the X50.
- Bug fix for WMV G2700 display codec.

By the way, the Aximsite thread starts with the initial release of the A05 update that was quickly pulled from Dell's web site for some unknown reason. However, it picks back up to the official release. |

An application has been released that allows Pocket PC users to run Palm OS applications on their Pocket PC. The platform is called StyleTap. Personally, I was a little skeptical, but it really does work. I installed Pocket Tunes for the Palm OS, and it worked very well. There are some issues with displaying the default HiFi skin, but overall, it works without any problems. Since I have not done a thorough test, there maybe some other issues as well.
StyleTap runs Palm OS applications in 320 x 320 resolution, so it does not use the entire screen. In addition, it really runs better on my X50v with the display at 66% (setting in StyleTap). However, this is a setting within StyleTap and may very depending on your device.
While it may be nice to run Palm OS applications on the Pocket PC, I really do not find it an ideal solution. I would rather have an application run natively on the device I have. In addition, many software titles rely heavily on the HotSync conduit to backup data and synchronize data with the desktop. SmartList To Go is one title that comes to my mind, especially since there is not a real Pocket PC equivalent.
Anyway, StyleTap has just been released, so I am sure there will be significant updates in the future to make it an ideal solution for Pocket PC users. For now, I will pass, but I will be waiting and watching.

I successfully performed the A03 ROM update on my X50v. I went ahead and just reinstalled all my applications. It was pretty much the same process I used for the A02 ROM update I performed earlier. Even the links to the updates work properly (one for X50 and one for X50v).

As mentioned before, the ROM updating process is really a lot more trouble than it should be. I do not ever remember a Palm ROM update recommending you reinstall all your applications. Oh, well... |

Well, I have not had a lot to comment on lately. Actually, I have, but I have been busy with other things. I am just now in the process of downloading the new ROM image for my Dell Axim X50v. It appears the ROM is good for the X50 and X50v, and it was released Wednesday, April 20th. I am really debating whether or not to reinstall all the applications after I load the new ROM or just restore from a backup. Decisions. Decisions. Decisions.
By the way, here is the list of updates:- Improved the compatibility with certain CF cards
- Improved the power management within the CompactFlash driver
- Improved the WLAN driver for the unrecognized card issue
- Improved Bluetooth memory management
- Enhanced the processor speed scheme (Auto) for better balance between performance and battery life
- Improved the compatibility of Bluetooth FTP
- Make the wireless button driver more robust
- Improved the compatibility of Switcher Bar application
- Enhanced the compatibility of Data Backup utility
- Enhanced the WEP key security
- Updated the Funk Odyssey client
- Improved the frequency change mechanism of 2700G
- Fixed issue when pausing live streaming video
- Updated 2700G display driver

Well, not a lot of new stuff has been going on with my X50v. It is getting plenty of use these days, but I still yearn for my Tungsten T5 at times. I really think it has more to do with my using Palm OS devices for so long that the Palm OS just seems more comfortable. At the same time, I cannot discount the simplicity of the Palm OS versus the Pocket PC OS.
I have installed a several updated software titles since my last post. Olive Tree has an updated version of BibleReader 3.52_F343, WebIS has released Pocket Informant 2005, and Lakeridge Software has released another beta of Wisbar Advance 2 v2.0.1.22. |

WebIS has released a public of Pocket Informant 2005. Since I am using version 5.6.1, I went ahead and installed the public beta to see what was coming. I like some of the changes, but I remain neutral at this point. I hope to have more time to explore. As always, when installing beta software, be sure you are backed up and prepared to recover from a hard reset. Although many have installed the beta version without any problems, it never hurts to be prepared.
